Overview

Investigate the Science of Learning and how key ideas can be applied in practice. 

The Science of Learning brings together education, neuroscience and psychology research to better understand the processes underpinning learning and the implications for teaching. You’ll be encouraged to reflect on your understanding of how people learn and use this reflection to develop your professional practice.

Co-designed by academic and industry leaders to be immediately useful, this first module in our four-part series will introduce you to the key concepts and implications.

This module aligns with AITSL Professional Standards for Teachers No. 1, 2 and 6.

Who should attend

  • Educators working in early learning centres, schools, adult education and training, professional and workplace training, or vocational education and training.
  • Educators wanting to pursue leadership roles.

Entry requirements

Relevant undergraduate qualification.

What you'll learn

  • Explore what promotes and hinders learning from the synapse level through to the sociocultural level.
  • Appreciate basic brain anatomy and physiology and what the evidence suggests about the developmental and environmental influences on the brain and learning.
  • Develop an understanding of the processes involved in individual and collective learning.
  • Comprehend the role of cognitive, affective, social and biological processes in learning and their role in attention, memory, learning regulation, social connection, motivation, engagement, well-being and achievement.

Time commitment

This is an online course that will require roughly 30 hours to complete.

  • Over 3 months.
  • If you enrol early, you can start as soon as 24 July 2023.

Assessment

You’ll need to submit a professional learning journal showing your reflections on the content and how it can be applied in your teaching practice.

Certification and accreditation

Earn 0.5 points towards professional development.
