When Nandhana Sasikala decided to study in Australia, she knew she wanted a university that would help her build the knowledge and skills to achieve her goal of creating safer and healthier workplaces.

Each year, The University of Queensland offers scholarships to support students from all backgrounds. Nandhana moved from India to Brisbane with a Science International Scholarship to study a Master of Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Health and Safety Science at UQ.

She said she chose UQ because of its strong reputation for quality education.

"UQ stood out to me because it offers one of the best programs in occupational hygiene and occupational health and safety science, which matches my career goals perfectly. I was also drawn to UQ's excellent teaching, research facilities, and the supportive environment it provides for international students."

UQ prestige and support

UQ is ranked first in Australia and #18 in the world for environmental sciences according to the QS World University Rankings 2026. This reflects the University's strength in teaching and research across science disciplines.

One of the highlights of Nandhana's experience in Brisbane has been receiving a Science International Scholarship.

Looking back and looking forward

Nandhana's interest in workplace health and safety grew from her background in emergency medical technology.

"I chose this program because I wanted to build a career where I can make workplaces safer and healthier for people," she says.

"With my background in emergency medical technology, I've seen firsthand how important it is to prevent risks and protect workers before accidents or illnesses happen."

At UQ, a degree, diploma or certificate is called a program. Subjects are called courses.

She highlighted that the practical focus of the Master of Occupational Hygiene and Occupational Health and Safety Science has been one of the program’s biggest strengths.

"The best thing about my program at UQ is how practical and well-structured it is. It combines theory with real applications, which makes the learning experience more meaningful."

"Studying at UQ is giving me the knowledge, practical skills, and confidence I need to achieve this," says Nandhana.

"The program's focus on practical applications, combined with guidance from experienced faculty, is helping me prepare for a meaningful and impactful career."

Finding a community

Outside of study, Nandhana has found a welcoming community in Brisbane.

“What I like most about living and studying in Brisbane is the relaxed lifestyle, the greenery, and how welcoming the people are," she says.

"That has made the transition much easier. I’ve made some good friends, both through university and outside, and they’ve helped me feel connected. My lifestyle here is quite balanced. While I focus on my studies, I also find time to explore the city, play badminton, work part time and spend time with friends.”

For future international students considering study at UQ, Nandhana encourages them to embrace new experiences and make use of the support and resources available at UQ.

"I'd tell students from other countries to stay open-minded and not be afraid to ask for help," she says.

"UQ has so many supportive people. Make friends, explore the campus and enjoy life outside class too. The best part is how welcoming everyone is; you'll feel at home sooner than you expect."

Scholarships at UQ recognise academic excellence and help remove barriers to education, whether you're a domestic or international student, an elite athlete, a high-achieving student, or someone overcoming personal challenges.
