Project description

The primary aim of this research project is to comprehensively investigate the national burden and outcomes of diabetes-related hospitalisations using patient-level linked population-wide data for the first time in Australia. The study aims to achieve a multifaceted understanding of the prevalence, economic implications, short-term and long-term outcomes, as well as regional and remote disparities associated with diabetes-related hospital admissions. The specific aims are outlined as follows:

  • Aim 1: To evaluate the national prevalence of diabetes-related hospitalisations
  • Aim 2: Determine the economic burden on healthcare system
  • Aim 3: Define early (30-day) outcomes including the risk of death and readmissions
  • Aim 4: Determine long-term outcomes including the risk of death, recurrent presentations, risk of downstream diabetes-related complications
  • Aim 5: Determine disparities in care outcomes in regional and remote populations
  • Aim 6: Develop population-level methods for surveillance of diabetes-related hospitalisations and outcomes suitable for implementation in health policy programs
