Hi, my name is Sripurna Bhowmick, I'm from India and I'm doing a Bachelor of Biomedical Science at The University of Queensland. I'm also a UQ International Student Ambassador.

Why did you choose to study in Australia and specifically at UQ?

I chose to study at UQ as it’s one of the best options in Australia and has plenty of research opportunities. The program I am studying is also one of the most commonly studied programs prior to medicine, which is one of the most flourishing fields in this country.

UQ is ranked within the world’s top 50 universities and the teaching staff and facilities for science are among the best.

Is studying in Australia what you expected and why?

Since Australia is an educational hub there are lots of international students, so you never feel out of place. The people here are very kind and cheerful and are always ready to help.

What are your thoughts on studying in Australia and Brisbane?

Brisbane is one of my favourite cities in Australia – I call this city my home. A walk alongside the Brisbane River is all I need to get rid of my stress. The people here are incredibly supportive and the help I have received from the university has made my life in Brisbane very comfortable.

What are the best things about your program at UQ?

The program has a heavy practical component, which gives me the opportunity to apply my knowledge in real life and perform different experiments. The laboratory facilities here are of the highest quality possible which ensures we get the experience of working in a professional lab. UQ also provides help with employability and provides students with all the help that is needed to start their careers in their desired fields.

The Bachelor of Biomedical Science deals with the subject I want to pursue in the future. It deals with the basis of biology in the first year and then we learn about the different branches of biology more in-depth. By third year, we learn about human anatomy. This program is the foundation for me to study medicine in the future.

Studying at UQ has helped me maintain a life outside of uni as well. Apart from my studies, I am also able to take part in other activities and voluntary service, including being part of the Margdarshak Award program for high achieving Indian students.

What advice would you give people from other countries about studying at UQ?

The student support teams at UQ are always there to help students out. They understand that it is not easy to move to a different country and settle in so if you reach out to them, they do everything possible to help you feel comfortable.

If you get the opportunity to study at UQ, you should definitely not miss it. Don’t forget to cherish every moment.
