Collaborative / joint supervision opportunities for PhD candidates
If you're a PhD candidate, our formal collaborative / joint supervision programs with the following partner universities enable you to enhance your doctoral research through additional international supervisory expertise and experience in different research environments
Partner universities
Part of a broader bilateral collaboration between UQ and Technical University of Denmark (DTU), PhD candidates can extend and enhance their research through participation in the collaborative doctoral supervision program.
Key program details
- Aspiring PhD candidates can only apply for advertised projects which have been jointly approved by DTU and UQ
- Doctoral candidates will be enrolled at UQ for 6 – 12 months
- You won't be charged tuition fees, but other administrative fees may apply
- At UQ, a student services amenities fee is charged each research quarter
- You'll have supervision at the host university and, for the period of the visit, access to the library, laboratory and other resources comparable to locally-enrolled doctoral candidates. Collaborative supervision candidates share supervision for the entire period of their candidature
- Your progression, thesis supervision and examination will remain the principal responsibility of your home institution
- At the completion of the program, you may request a DTU-UQ certificate confirming your participation in the program, but you won’t receive an award or academic transcript from the host institution.
Eligibility
To be eligible for the program, you must:
- Apply through the home institution’s online application portal
- Be selected by the Principal Advisor (project lead) at the home institution through a competitive process
- Meet UQ’s English language proficiency requirements.’
UQ and UNESP offer a collaborative supervision program for PhD students.
Key program details
- Doctoral candidates participating in the program will be enrolled at UQ for stays of 12 months over the course of your candidature.
- You won't be charged tuition fees, but other administrative fees may apply.
- At UQ a student services amenities fee is charged each research quarter.
- Collaborative supervision candidates share supervision for the entire period of your candidature and use your time at the host university to visit your co-supervisor.
- Your progression, thesis supervision and examination will remain the responsibility of your home institution.
Eligibility
The program is open to UNESP doctoral candidates from all disciplines.
To be eligible for the program, you must:
- have approval/support from the UNESP supervisor
- have found a supervisor at UQ
- be a regular member of the UNESP Graduate School
- have attained the equivalent of UQ’s confirmation milestone (at least 12 months in to the program)
- meet UQ’s English language proficiency requirements. If you're unable to provide test results, contact your research exchange representative.

Existing doctoral candidates at UQ who are interested in the collaborative supervision opportunity with UNESP are encouraged to contact the HDR Partnerships team in the Graduate School to discuss further.
UQ and Technical University of Munich, Germany, have established a collaborative supervision program for PhD students.

- Doctoral candidates participating in collaborative programs will be enrolled at UQ for stays of 3-12 months.

- You'll have supervision at the host university and, for the period of the visit, access to the library, laboratory and other resources comparable to locally-enrolled doctoral candidates. Collaborative supervision candidates share supervision for the entire period of their candidature.

- At the completion of the program, you may request a TUM-UQ certificate confirming your participation in the program, but you won’t receive an award or academic transcript from the host institution.
Eligibility
The TUM-UQ collaborative supervision program is open to TUM doctoral candidates from all disciplines.
To be eligible for the program, you must:
- have approval/support from the TUM supervisor
- have found a supervisor at UQ
- be a regular member of the TUM Graduate School
- have attended the TUM Graduate School Kick-Off Seminar
- have passed the interim evaluation/feedback talk at the time of anticipated start date at the host institution
- have attained the equivalent of UQ’s confirmation milestone (at least 12 months in to the program)
- meet UQ’s English language proficiency requirements. If you're unable to provide test results, contact your home institution’s Graduate School representative.
Information for current PhD candidates at UQ
Existing doctoral candidates at UQ who are interested in the collaborative supervision opportunity with TUM are encouraged to contact the HDR Partnerships team in the Graduate School to discuss further.
In support of the International Research Training Group (IRTG) Accelerating Crop Genetic Gain that was established between UQ and Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU), PhD candidates can extend and enhance their research training and experience through a collaborative PhD supervision program.
Leading scientists from the Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) and the School of Agriculture and Food Sustainability will be involved in supervising candidates in the IRTG. All IRTG students will be supervised at UQ with associate advisors in Germany, with the opportunity to participate in research and research training workshops in both Australia and Germany.

- Prospective PhD candidates can only apply for projects advertised by IRTG project leads at the home institution
- Doctoral candidates will be enrolled at the host institution for 3 – 6 months.
- You won't be charged tuition fees, but other administrative fees may apply
- At UQ, a student services amenities fee is charged each research quarter
- You'll have supervision at the host university and, for the period of the visit, access to the library, laboratory and other resources comparable to locally-enrolled doctoral candidates. PhD candidates have supervision from both UQ and JLU researchers for the entire period of their candidature.
- Your progression, thesis supervision and examination will remain the principal responsibility of your home institution
- At the completion of the program, you may request a JLU-UQ certificate confirming your participation in the program, but you won’t receive an award or academic transcript from the host institution.
