Why study a higher degree by research (HDR) with us? 

Higher degree by research (HDR) programs at UQ include the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), the Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and the Doctor of Veterinary Clinical Science. HDR students produce new knowledge and expertise that is innovative, relevant and progressive.

People with a PhD generally earn more over their lifetime and have a higher rate of employment, compared with people who do not hold this degree.

Are you eligible?

We recognise that you may have work or educational experience that make you suitable for a HDR.

If you have any of the below we encourage you to apply.

Work experience

Work experience at a senior level of at least 5 years with evidence that you've:

  • planned and executed a project
  • produced high-level written reports
  • worked with a high-level of independence.

Bachelor’s degree and work experience

A bachelor’s degree and work experience of at least 2 years with evidence that you've:

  • planned and executed a project
  • worked with a high-level of independence.

Bachelor’s degree with honours

A bachelor’s degree with honours from approved universities, which should include a relevant research component.

Work experience and a Graduate Certificate

At least 2 years’ work experience in your proposed field of study and a supporting Graduate Certificate.

You're also able to apply if you meet any of the other entry criteria outlined under the HDR program entry requirements.

Assessments

Applications will be assessed against the program applied for.

  • Applicants may be provided with an alternative program offer depending on their qualifications and experience.
  • Students who have applied for a PhD, but have been offered entry in to a MPhil, may be able to transfer to a PhD at a later date based on the completion of key milestones.

Scholarships

Find a scholarship to support you. In addition to tuition scholarship, you'll get a $42K living stipend each year. 

You can apply at any time for these scholarships. However, please try to apply at least 2 to 3 months before the research quarter in which you hope to start, to ensure there is enough time for a committee to review your application.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)

A Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is an internationally recognised graduate research program that will enable you to become an independent researcher.

Master of Philosophy (MPhil)

With guidance from your advisory team, you will undertake a significant research project and complete a 40,000-word thesis and an oral examination.

Doctor of Veterinary Clinical Science

This residency program is designed for already qualified veterinarians. Successful applicants receive a $45,000 tax free living stipend.
