Review entry requirements
To be considered for an offer to a program, you'll need to meet all the entry requirements.
Check the program page for specific entry requirements.
For all of our programs, you need to meet the:
Some programs also have inherent requirements that you must meet to be able to graduate.
Subject prerequisites
All our undergraduate programs have subject prerequisites. These are specific subjects you must have studied to be eligible for an offer. Prerequisites ensure you have an appropriate level of subject area knowledge when you start your program.
Subject prerequisites are listed as Queensland Year 12 General subjects. You need to achieve a grade of C or higher in Units 3 and 4.
However, you can also meet the prerequisites if you've passed equivalent subjects through high school (interstate or overseas) or tertiary study (including bridging and preparatory) programs.
View equivalent prerequisite subjects
Some programs also have recommended knowledge areas. These aren't compulsory, but they may help you to understand program material.
If you're from a non-English speaking background, you'll also have to meet our English language requirements.
Entry score threshold
Once you satisfy a program's subject prerequisites and any other requirements, admission is based on your entry score.
Entry to UQ programs is competitive – the number of available places is usually smaller than the number of people applying.
Places are allocated in order of applicants' entry scores until the program is full. When the last place in a program is filled, the entry score of the last applicant to be made an offer becomes the 'entry score threshold'. This threshold includes any adjustments received under our admissions schemes. Entry score thresholds can change each year depending on how many places are available and how many people apply.
Each program lists 2 equivalent entry score thresholds: ATAR/selection rank and International Baccalaureate (IB) score. The published scores are a guide based on the previous year.
Otherwise, you'll be assigned a QTAC selection rank based on your previous study, qualifications or employment. This allows us to compare applicants with different experience. Selection ranks range from 30.00 to 99.95, with 99.95 being the highest score.
To make sure you're assessed on your highest possible entry score, apply for any admission schemes you're eligible for.
Minimum ATAR guarantee
If you meet our guaranteed minimum ATAR you could secure an offer for your preferred program.
How your experience converts to a selection rank
Select the option that's most relevant to your study and work background.
If you have several potential selection ranks (e.g. from previous Year 12 results, VET study and employment), you'll generally be assessed on the highest rank. Some exceptions may apply.
If you've completed 1 year full-time (or equivalent) of higher education study at bachelor level or higher, your selection rank will be based on this study only – even if your rank from another qualification is higher.
You're a recent secondary student if you've completed secondary education in the current year or previous 2 years. This includes secondary education completed in Australia or overseas at a school, TAFE, or other VET or higher education provider.
Australian Year 12
If you're currently studying Year 12 in Australia and you’re eligible for an ATAR, this will be used as your entry score.
If you’re a current Year 12 student and you’re not eligible for an ATAR, you won’t receive a selection rank for your secondary studies.
If you apply to start studying at UQ in the year after you finish Year 12, you can only use your secondary education qualification to gain an entry score. Other qualifications won’t count towards your entry score, including Certificate III or IV, diplomas, or music, speech or drama awards. You may be able to use these qualifications for entry in later years.
Some other types of secondary education results may be converted to a selection rank.

If your highest level of study is in higher education (such as at university), you can be assigned a selection rank based on:
- your level of study (such as bachelor's or master's level)
- the duration of your study
- your grade point average (GPA).
Once you've completed 1 year of full-time study (or equivalent) at bachelor level or higher, your selection rank will be based on this study only – even if your rank from another qualification is higher.
You may be able to calculate your rank using the following information sheet:

Bridging study
If you've completed less than one full year of bachelor-level (or higher) study, UQ-approved bridging programs can be used to determine your selection rank.
If you've completed the UQ College Tertiary Preparation Program you can calculate your rank using the following information sheet:

You can be assigned a selection rank based on Vocational and Education Training (VET) study if your highest level of study is a competency-based or graded:
- AQF Certificate III (completed)
- AQF Certificate IV (completed)
- AQF Diploma
- sub-bachelor level study (based on the level and duration of study, and your grade point average).
If you’re a current Year 12 student, you can’t use VET study for entry to UQ in the next year after you finish Year 12. You may be able to use this study for entry in later years.
If you've completed competency-based VET study, you can raise your selection rank by combining it with results from the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT), as long as you're over 18 and not a current Year 12 student.
You may be able to calculate your rank using the following information sheets:

If you left secondary education more than 2 years ago and haven't done any VET or higher education study, you can be assigned a selection rank based on:
- previous secondary education
- post-secondary professional and para-professional qualifications and service
- the Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) or employment experience, as long as you're over 18 and not a current Year 12 student.
Post-secondary professional or para-professional qualifications and service can include:
- some creative arts, language and civil aviation qualifications
- memberships of professional associations that have qualifying exams
- police, defence and emergency services.

Need help meeting the entry requirements?
Our pathway options can help you meet the subject prerequisite or entry score requirements for your preferred program.
Check the program page and select your qualification for specific entry requirements.
For all our programs, you need to:
- complete a qualification accepted by UQ – Queensland Year 12 or an equivalent qualification
- achieve the minimum entry score
- satisfy any subject prerequisites
- meet the English language requirements
- successfully complete any program-specific application requirements.
Some programs have a quota, which means there are limited places available. As entry is competitive, meeting the minimum entry requirements for these programs does not guarantee admission. For programs without a quota, UQ offers places to all applicants who meet the program's minimum entry requirements.
Some programs also have inherent requirements that you must meet to be able to graduate.
Qualification
To be offered a place in an undergraduate program, you need to have successfully completed Queensland Year 12, or a qualification equivalent to Queensland Year 12, with the required minimum entry score for the program you're interested in studying.
You may also be considered if you have studied a diploma, advanced diploma, or a year or more of tertiary study.
Minimum entry score
A minimum entry score is the lowest score you need to achieve to be considered for a place in a program.
This score is displayed in different ways, depending on the studies you have completed:
Australian Year 12, International Baccalaureate or New Zealand NCEA studies
You must achieve the required ATAR score, Queensland rank or IB score for your preferred UQ program if you are currently studying:
- Australian Year 12 (or equivalent)
- International Baccalaureate, or
- National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA) Level 3 in New Zealand.
International studies equivalent to Australian Year 12
If you're currently completing your senior schooling overseas, you must achieve the equivalent of the required entry score for your preferred UQ program.
Non-school leavers
If you’re not a current school leaver, we’ll assess your application based on any study you have completed since finishing high school.
Prerequisites
Some undergraduate programs have subject prerequisites – specific subjects you must have studied to gain admission. Prerequisites help ensure that you have an appropriate level of subject area knowledge when you start the program.
Subject prerequisites are listed as Queensland Year 12 General subjects, but you may be able to meet them if you've studied equivalent subjects at an interstate or overseas high school, at university or through a bridging program.
Some programs also have recommended knowledge areas. These aren't compulsory, but we recommend them to ensure you're in the best possible position to understand program material.
If you’re not currently studying Year 12 (or equivalent), your application will be assessed to determine whether you have met the required prerequisites.
English language requirements
All applicants have to meet our English language requirements. For most programs, you’ll need to meet the minimum requirements, but some programs have higher requirements.
There are many ways you can meet English requirements, including previous study, English language tests and work experience.
