If your entry score isn't what you hoped for – or if you don't meet a program's subject prerequisites – we offer a range of pathways to help you on your way.
Before you choose a pathway, check if:
- your previous study or experience can be used to gain a selection rank
- you're eligible for admission schemes that will help you gain entry.
Choosing a pathway
The best pathway for you will depend on your previous study and the entry requirements you need to meet.
To meet a subject prerequisite, you may be able to complete one of the following:
- a bridging course
- the Tertiary Preparation Program
- other bridging programs
- a Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT).
Bridging courses
Bridging courses are standalone courses you can use to meet subject prerequisites. The duration, cost and delivery mode for these courses vary.
If you need to meet a prerequisite in time for the QTAC January major offer round, you may be able to complete an intensive face-to-face bridging course through UQ College in one or more of the following:
- Mathematical Methods
- Biology
- Chemistry
- Physics.
Intensive bridging courses are offered over 4 weeks in November/December each year.
UQ College Face to Face Bridging Courses
UQ College offers online bridging courses to help you fulfil prerequisites in:
- Pure Mathematics (Mathematical Methods)
- General Mathematics
These courses are self-accessed, with commencement dates occurring year-round.
UQ College Online Bridging Courses
You can't use individual bridging courses to gain a selection rank. If you need a higher rank for admission to your chosen UQ program, refer to Increase your selection rank below.

Tertiary Preparation Program
UQ College offers a Tertiary Preparation Program at our St Lucia campus.
This 30-week program allows you to meet subject prerequisites while achieving or improving your selection rank. You’ll also learn the core academic skills required for entry into undergraduate study at The University of Queensland.
Through the UQ College Tertiary Preparation Program, you can gain a selection rank of up to 93 for entry to a UQ undergraduate.

Other bridging programs
Bridging programs are made up of a variety of courses to help you meet subject prerequisites and gain skills to succeed at university.
If you haven't already completed one full-time year of bachelor-level study, bridging programs can also be used to increase your selection rank.
You can also study a Certificate IV in Adult Tertiary Preparation through other providers.
The maximum selection rank you can gain from bridging programs varies. If you're applying for a program with a high entry score threshold, you may want to consider using the tertiary studies pathway instead.

Unilearn courses
To improve your English language proficiency, you may be able to complete an English language pathway through UQ College
Bridging English
Bridging English is a packaged option for students who:
- need to meet the minimum English Language Proficiency requirement
- have met the academic requirements of their UQ degree program
- have a minimum IELTS score (or equivalent) of 5.0 across all bands.
To apply, indicate that you want to apply for a package offer during the application process to UQ. You will need to submit a valid English test result.
Integrated English
Integrated English is a flexible option for students who:
- have met the academic requirements of their UQ degree program
- have a minimum IELTS score (or equivalent) of less than 5.0 or who need to meet a higher-than-minimum English score to enter their UQ degree program.
Integrated English may be included with a packaged offer for the Foundation Program, depending on your current English test score.
To meet all minimum entry requirements, you may be able to complete a foundation program.

UQ College offers a Foundation Program that can help you meet all minimum entry requirements for your preferred UQ program.
