You're a domestic student if you are:

  • a citizen of Australia or New Zealand,
  • an Australian permanent resident, or
  • a holder of an Australian permanent humanitarian visa.

You're an international student if you are:

  • intending to study on a student visa,
  • not a citizen of Australia or New Zealand,
  • not an Australian permanent resident, or
  • a temporary resident (visa status) of Australia.

Before you apply

Understand if you're eligible and what to do before you apply.

Application dates

To apply, you will need to submit:

  1. an initial expression of interest (EOI), to ensure a supervisor will support your research
  2. a final application, if invited after the supervisor reviews your EOI.

The deadlines to submit your EOI or final application will depend on whether you’re applying for a UQ scholarship or project with a specific closing date.

You must also allow time for your Australian student visa to be processed.

Find a supervisor or project

You need to either:

You do not need to contact your proposed supervisor. Provide their name when you submit your EOI. They will review your EOI and contact you if they are interested in discussing working with you.

See what scholarships are available, what they offer (fees and/or living stipend), eligibility requirements, deadlines and how to apply.

Search scholarships

Check the tuition fees of your program. If you're successful for a UQ stipend scholarship you'll also receive a tuition fee scholarship.

Also consider additional costs, including budgeting for general living expenses, relocation costs and airfares.
