Project description
The PhD project topic is deliberately open to allow candidates to develop their own specific ideas and interests drawing on their existing skills and experience.
While this project investigates the agency of Aboriginal Frontier War Memorials, the successful candidate may focus their research on related topics. For example, candidates may wish to focus their research on war memorials (shrines of remembrance, monuments, obelisks, ANZAC memorials, cenotaphs, etc); Australian history (1830s-1920s); regional and remote communities; Indigenous history; Indigenous knowledges.
Using Yarning as an Indigenist research methodology, 14 sites will be visited across Australia and Indigenous (and non-Indigenous) peoples interviewed on Country.
Research environment
The project necessitates research excursions on Country to a variety of locations across Australia. Locations involve rural and remote locations. The candidate must be available to undertake such travel (up to seven interstate trips and three within Queensland) over a two-year period (travel and accommodation costs are met by the project).
The candidate will be responsible for managing equipment, set up and safe use of camera kit during research trips
