Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning (Honours)
Overview
Gain the knowledge and skills needed to help communities, companies and governments integrate the environmental, economic and social aspects of development from site design to regional scale analysis.
This program is for high-achieving students who have completed the Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning, and want to advance their study and undertake a research project.
You'll acquire the necessary skills to plan cities and regional towns, and study key areas of successful development. Topics include land use, transport, infrastructure and urban design, alongside real estate markets, investment, sustainability, community consultation and strategic long-term town planning.
You'll undertake projects that emphasise planning theory and design skills. Work with industry, government and community partners, and become involved on long-range planning and legislative frameworks for real-life developments.

My lecturers in planning and design really forged my passion for planning at a macro level. The staff are genuinely interested in nurturing you to be the best planner you can be, and provide you with all the tools necessary to start you off.
There’s nothing better than driving around Brisbane and being able to point at the projects that you gained approval for, or seeing projects being built where you drafted the planning document that has facilitated that growth.
One of these best experiences during my time at UQ was taking part in a summer semester course in Vietnam. It was an exciting and enriching learning experience to be able to study at a Vietnamese university and experience the culture while working toward my degree.

Entry requirements
Prerequisites
- have a GPA of 5.5 in courses that can be credited towards the BRTP(Hons) program; or
- satisfied the head of school that the person is qualified to undertake honours.

English language requirements
IELTS overall 6.5; reading 6; writing 6; speaking 6; listening 6. For other English Language Proficiency Tests and Scores approved for UQ
TOEFL iBT (including Paper Edition) - Overall 87, listening 19, reading 19, writing 21 and speaking 19.
PTE Academic - Overall Score of 64 and 60 in all sub bands.
BE - A minimum overall grade of 4 plus a minimum grade of C in all macro skills.
CES - Overall 176 and 169 in all sub bands.
OET is not accepted.

Student visas
International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning (Honours) are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500).
There are a number of requirements you must satisfy before a visa is granted, including the Genuine Student (GS) requirement.

Financial aid
As an international student, you might be eligible for financial aid – either from your home country, or from the Australian Government.
HECS-HELP
Domestic places in the Bachelor of Regional and Town Planning (Honours) are Commonwealth Supported. This means the cost of your education is shared between you and the Australian Government.
Instead of tuition fees, Commonwealth Supported students pay what are called student contribution amounts.
HECS-HELP is an Australian Government loan scheme to assist eligible students with the cost of their student contribution amounts.
