Deferring your QTAC offer

Thinking about taking a gap year? You may be able to defer your offer and delay the start of your program for up to a year.

Can I defer?

If you're a domestic student, you're eligible to defer if you have:

  • received an offer for a UQ program starting in Semester 1
  • not yet enrolled in courses for your UQ program
  • not already deferred your offer – you can't defer the same offer more than once.

You can't defer an offer to start studying in Semester 2.

How do I defer?

Respond to your offer through QTAC by the specified due date and indicate that you want to defer.

After you've responded to your offer, we'll send you a confirmation email in April.

How to respond to your QTAC offer

If you've already accepted your offer but now want to defer, contact UQ Admissions on (07) 3365 2203 or admissions@uq.edu.au. If classes have started, it's too late to defer.

During deferment

If you've deferred your studies, you're not officially a UQ student. This means you can't:

  • attend classes
  • access the library or student support services
  • access UQ systems and online student resources
  • receive a UQ student card.

Your deferred offer will be cancelled if you enrol in study at bachelor level or higher at any tertiary institution (including UQ) while you're on deferment.

If your program is discontinued during the deferment period, you won't be able to start studying this program. We'll contact you about alternative study options, and you'll have to reapply through QTAC for a different program.

Starting study after deferment

To start study after your deferment, you must enrol in at least 1 UQ course by early December. We'll email you to remind you to enrol.

Enrolments open in mid-November each year. To enrol, follow the instructions on the Starting at UQ website. If you can't remember your UQ username and password, contact Information Technology Services.

Your deferred offer will be cancelled if you don't enrol in at least 1 course by the specified due date.

To defer your studies means to delay the start of your program to a future semester.

If you applied through QTAC and want to defer the start of your UQ program, email iasdeferral@uq.edu.au. In your email include:

  • your student number
  • the semester you would like to defer to
  • the reasons you want to defer.
