Queensland Mathematics Summer School

Hosted by UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics, this multi-day non-residential program is for current Year 9 and 10 students who will be studying maths in their senior years.

The inclusive QMSS program is led by mathematicians from a wide range of backgrounds, and is designed for all students who love maths! We are enthusiastic about having a diverse range of students from all schools and identities involved.

What you’ll learn

You’ll delve into the deep, difficult, fun, mysterious, abstract, interconnected and useful aspects of this fascinating subject.

• Explore and immerse yourself in mathematics: previous topics have included artificial intelligence, number theory, abstract algebra, machine learning, cryptography and pandemic modelling through interactive lectures, tutorials and seminars.
• Develop and extend your mathematical skills in problem-solving, communication, analysis and reasoning.
• Learn from mathematicians who are passionate about their subject – from globally renowned researchers to experts in mathematical education. You'll also hear from current UQ students keen to share their experience and knowledge.
• Make friends with a diverse cohort of students from around the state and discover how much fun it is to be around people who are passionate about mathematics.

Who should attend

• Students commencing Year 10 and 11 in 2027 who have chosen to study QCE Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics or IB Mathematics (HL or SL).
• Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander, women, nonbinary and LGBTQIA+ students are encouraged to apply.

Cost

The cost of QMSS is $270 (inc GST).

Eligible students are invited to apply for need-based financial support, fee waivers and travel/accommodation bursaries as part of their overall application process.

QMSS is a non-residential school, which means parents/guardians need to arrange accommodation and transport for students to get to and from UQ each day.
