Queensland Mathematics Summer School

Queensland Mathematics Summer School

Join us at UQ to study with our mathematicians.

UQ’s Queensland Mathematics Summer School (QMSS) introduces Year 10 students to the beauty of advanced mathematical ideas and new ways of thinking.

Hosted by UQ’s School of Mathematics and Physics each year, this multi-day, non-residential program is for all current Year 10 students who have a passion for mathematics.

The program will be led by mathematicians from a wide range of backgrounds, and we are enthusiastic about having a diverse range of students from all schools, backgrounds, and identities involved. This inclusive program is for everyone who loves maths!

What you'll learn

  • Delve into mysterious, abstract and useful aspects of this fascinating subject.
  • Learn about artificial intelligence, number theory, abstract algebra, machine learning, cryptography, and pandemic modelling.
  • Develop and extend your mathematical skills in problem-solving, communication, analysis and reasoning.

What’s involved

  • Learn from mathematicians who are passionate about their subject – from globally renowned researchers to experts in mathematical education.
  • Hear from current UQ students, who are keen to share their experience and knowledge.
  • Make friends with a diverse cohort of students from around the state and discover how much fun it is to be around people who are passionate about mathematics.

Who should attend

  • Current Year 10 students who have chosen to study QCE Mathematical Methods and Specialist Mathematics or IB Mathematics (HL or SL) in 2024.
  • Women, nonbinary and LGBTQIA+ students are encouraged to apply.

Cost

The cost of QMSS is $150.

Eligible students are invited to apply for need-based financial support, fee waivers and travel/accommodation bursaries, as part of their overall application process.

QMSS is a non-residential school, which means parents/guardians need to arrange accommodation and transport for students to get to and from UQ each day. If you're travelling from outside Brisbane, you can find options available on the UQ accommodation website.

Applications

Applications close on 14 October 2023.

First-round offers will be sent out in late November 2023.
