Why UQ?

Choosing UQ was an easy decision for Rajbir. With family members who had studied there before, he had heard nothing but great things about the institution. He was also drawn to UQ's proximity to his home country and the similar climate, which made the transition to studying abroad smoother. Additionally, UQ's reputation for academic excellence and extracurricular opportunities made it the perfect fit for Rajbir's aspirations.

Throughout his study journey, the university has consistently been a great help in supporting Rajbir. UQ has a network of student-accessible and friendly services designed to support someone taking their first step in tertiary education. Rajbir particularly praises the academic counsellors, who in his opinion are “absolute legends.” With their support and guidance, Rajbir has been able to navigate the academic challenges of university life and achieve his goals. He is grateful for the resources and support that UQ has provided him, and he is excited to continue his education at this world-class institution.

"UQ is an amazing place and an institution I am really proud to be a part of,” he shares.

UQ’s Employability Award

Rajbir's dedication to his studies and extracurricular activities has earned him several awards and achievements at UQ. He received the academic excellence award for his outstanding performance during his undergraduate studies, and he was also selected for the Employability Award, which recognises students who invest in their employability by participating in volunteering, internships, and other extracurricular activities.

"The process of getting selected was indeed a great experience with insightful help from mentors as well as faculty members," he explains.

Life in Brisbane

Living in Brisbane as an international student has been a unique experience for Rajbir and he has enjoyed exploring the city's urban and natural settings.

“[Brisbane is] close to world-famous Gold Coast beaches yet the CBD affords us our urban creature comforts such as cinemas and awesome restaurants,” Rajbir says. “This myriad of choices in terms of places and activities is truly unique to Brisbane.”

In his spare time, Rajbir takes advantage of Brisbane's great running and cycling tracks along the Brisbane River for exercise. He also likes to hit the university’s gym, which has three floors worth of excellent exercise equipment.

Future plans

Looking to the future, Rajbir plans to continue his education at UQ by applying for the Doctor of Medicine program. This program provides students with the knowledge, skills, and practical experience they need to excel in the field of medicine. With its focus on hands-on learning, cutting-edge research, and world-class faculty, the program is a natural fit for Rajbir's ambitions. He is eager to make the most of this opportunity to develop his skills and make a meaningful impact on the world.

Rajbir's long-term goal is to use his medical training to implement policies that improve healthcare outcomes for underserved communities globally. He understands the importance of ensuring better access to life-saving treatments and drugs for those who need it most.

"I want to make a positive impact on global healthcare, and Public Health is the perfect pathway to achieving this goal,” he shares.

Parting advice

As an international student, Rajbir has faced his fair share of challenges, from adjusting to a new culture to navigating a new academic system. However, he has embraced these challenges and recognised them as opportunities for growth. He encourages future international students to take full advantage of university life and the opportunities available.

"My advice to future international students would be to ensure you fully immerse yourself in what university life has to offer. The connections and life experiences you stand to gain from that is truly worth stepping out of your comfort zone for,” he says.
