Study tips
Published 22 Aug, 2024  ·  4-minute read

The UQ MBA has long been one of the most flexible Master of Business Administration (MBA) programs, offering students different options when it comes to when, where and how they study. Our responsive program design enables students to customise their learning experience with enhanced choice and flexibility built into the program.

Here’s what you’ll study in the UQ MBA and how to tailor the program to gain maximum value and meet your career and professional development needs.

Build your knowledge with core courses

Every UQ MBA student completes 5 courses that teach them the core business knowledge required for leadership success. The topics of these courses include resonant leadership, strategy, financial management, accounting, and leading people and teams. These courses (and the entire program) will equip you with a transformation mindset, by learning to consider sustainability, ethics, law, digital, governance and risk considerations, frameworks and practices.

Expand your capabilities with exciting MBA electives

Building on these 5 core courses, you’ll extend your business knowledge and expertise across various domains and functions by completing 4, 5 or all 6 of these MBA electives:

  • Digitalising Business
  • Transformational Marketing
  • Strategic Human Resources Management (HRM)
  • Operations Delivery and Transformation
  • Innovation Leadership
  • Business Economics.

Explore a range of diverse flexible core courses

Our flexible core course options allow you to further customise your learning experience and get the most out of your program. Is there a particular business topic you want to gain more expertise in? Do you want to broaden your experience in building and embedding strategic business solutions or entrepreneurial ventures? Or do you want to take advantage of our program’s flexibility by completing a course outside the MBA or travelling overseas? This is your chance to extend your learning to suit your needs.

To personalise your MBA learning experience, there are several possible options you can pursue. These include:

1. UQ MBA Impact Academy

Through your choice of 1, 2 or 3 courses, this unique learning experience provides the opportunity to learn transferable problem-solving skills and then apply your learnings to a product, service or business idea. In these immersive experiential courses, you’ll address complex business problems and opportunities emanating from social, environmental, technological or economic disruption. You’ll also develop practical, impactful approaches to creating and delivering value to diverse stakeholders across businesses and sectors.

2. Research

The UQ MBA also offers you the chance to pursue a research project to prepare for a research career (PhD pathway) or to become an expert on a business topic. If you’re interested in this option, you’ll need to complete 1 research methods course as well as your own independent research project.

Explore your interests

You can also complement the key capabilities you're learning in the MBA with an elective outside the program that aligns with your interests or career ambitions. Options include:
