Project description
This is an Australian Research Council funded project to investigate the molecular mechanisms driving chemical resistance in cattle ticks which supports a 3.5 year PhD program. There is opportunity to gain further work experience by extending the PhD to 4 years to enable an industry placement during the degree.
Ticks are a significant burden on global agriculture, acting as vectors for tick borne pathogens, affecting livelihoods and global food security.
Chemical treatments are the only method of control, but these chemicals are not environmentally sustainable, and ticks are adapting and building resistance, an immediate problem that requires urgent and effective solutions.
Current tests for chemical resistance are slow and require laboratory facilities leading to inappropriate use of chemicals, driving further resistance.
This project will collect ticks from the field and deep sequence the genomes of susceptible and resistant ticks to identify the genetic changes driving resistance. This information will be used to develop flexible molecular tests for resistance.
Research environment
The Queensland Alliance for Agriculture and Food Innovation (QAAFI) at The University of Queensland offers an outstanding and highly supportive research environment, providing the opportunity to develop advanced research skills at the interface of genomics, biotechnology, and agricultural innovation. QAAFI has an active student association supporting career development and networking for all postgraduate students.
You will receive extensive training in state-of-the-art genomic analysis technologies and bioinformatics approaches, equipping them expertise for careers in Australia's rapidly biotechnology, agricultural, and life sciences sectors.
The position also offers opportunities for both domestic and international travel to collaborate with leading researchers, undertake field-based research, and present findings at national and international conferences.
This project is conducted in partnership with global animal health leader Boehringer Ingelheim and in collaboration with the Queensland Department of Primary Industries, providing valuable exposure to both industry and government research environments.

How to apply
This project requires candidates to commence no later than Research Quarter 4, 2027. You can start in an earlier research quarter.
You must submit an expression of interest (EOI) by the closing date for the research quarter (RQ) you want to start in:
Before you apply
- Check your eligibility for the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD).
- Prepare your documentation.
- If you have any questions about whether the project is suitable for your research interests, contact Dr Hannah Siddle (h.siddle@uq.edu.au).
When you apply
To apply, submit an expression of interest (EOI) for the program. You don't need to apply separately for the project or scholarship. How to submit an EOI
