Project description

Understanding how protein motions influence function is one of biology's greatest challenges.

This PhD project will develop cutting-edge quantum technologies to measure protein motions at unprecedented speed and use lasers to precisely control them. 

These advances will provide powerful new tools for revealing how protein dynamics shape biological function.

Beyond advancing fundamental science, the project has significant practical applications. The same quantum technologies can be used to generate highly sensitive protein fingerprints for proteomics. 

In collaboration with partners including Sports Integrity Australia, the research aims to develop methods for distinguishing synthetic erythropoietin (EPO) from its naturally occurring counterpart. 

Because synthetic EPO has been illegally used as a performance-enhancing drug in sport, this work has the potential to strengthen anti-doping capabilities and help protect the integrity of competition in the lead-up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

Research environment

This PhD project is based in the UQ Quantum Optics Laboratory and supported by the ARC Centre of Excellence in Quantum Biotechnology (QUBIC), which is developing transformative quantum technologies to observe biological processes with unprecedented detail.

QUBIC brings together researchers across quantum science, biology, engineering, and medicine to create technologies that extend far beyond current capabilities — from portable brain imagers and super-fast single-protein sensors to next-generation quantum microscopes. 

These advances aim to uncover fundamental biological processes, from how enzymes drive chemical reactions to how complex brain functions emerge from networks of neurons.

As a PhD researcher, you will work at the interface of quantum physics and biology, developing innovative imaging and sensing technologies with applications in biomedical research and healthcare. 

Through QUBIC’s multidisciplinary environment, your research will contribute to advancing Australian innovation across areas including manufacturing, energy, agriculture, health, and national security.

Scholarship

This project is supported by the Research project scholarship.

This scholarship includes:

  • living stipend of $41,555 per annum tax free (2026 rate), indexed annually
  • tuition fees covered.

  • honours and awards
  • employment history.

A working knowledge of bio physics and/or biology would be of benefit to someone working on this project.

You will demonstrate academic achievement in the fields of physics, biology, and/or bioengineering and the potential for scholastic success.

A background or knowledge of any of optics, scientific programming, nanofabrication, and microscopy is highly desirable.
