Health and safety services
Brisbane is a safe place to live and study, but it's important to look after yourself.
Stay healthy, stay happy – it’s important to look after yourself while you’re studying. There are a range of health and safety services available to you on campus.
Make sure you attend our compulsory health and safety sessions when you arrive:
They provide key information about safety, the Australian healthcare system, and your Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC).
If you're from a country that has a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with Australia, you may be able to apply for Medicare, which may cover some additional medical expenses. You still need to have OSHC.
UQ Health Care
If you need to see a doctor or nurse, UQ Health Care is available on campus. It’s an accredited general practice providing comprehensive and confidential health services for UQ students.
- general medicine and specialist referrals
- sexual health and contraception advice
- pathology collection
- minor surgery
- travel advice
UQ Health Care bulk bills eligible patients, meaning that you only pay for immunisations and medications prescribed.
UQ Health Care also 'bulk bills', meaning that if you're covered under Medicare Australia or Allianz Care Australia (UQ's preferred OSHC provider) you only pay for immunisations and medications prescribed.
If you have other OSHC insurance you will need to pay for your consultation at the time of service and claim a refund from your OSHC insurer.

Visiting an Australian hospital
If you need to be admitted as an inpatient to a hospital for treatment, it is important you speak with your OSHC provider as early as possible.
Public hospital outpatient departments, including emergency departments, will admit you with some up-front charges; however, these are typically fully refundable through your OSHC provider.
Private hospitals can charge an up-front fee before they admit or treat you. As a rule, private hospitals will charge more for their services and may not be covered under OSHC.

- preventative care
- hygiene and cleaning
