Mine Water Management Program Part 4

Water Quality Assessment for Mine Sites

Delivered by Sustainable Minerals Institute

Overview

Contamination of surface and groundwater may happen through the life cycle of a mining project with potential adverse effects on sensitive receptors, including valued surface waters and groundwater abstraction zones. Mine-impacted water is, therefore, a common community and environmental concern, as it can have serious impacts on water quality, aquatic life, ecosystems and drinking water resources.

This course is designed to help you gain fundamental understanding of mine water chemistry, and practical knowledge of monitoring and sampling programs, as well as analysing and reporting of water quality data.

  • Oversee the design of monitoring networks, development of mine water quality monitoring programs, and management of surface water and groundwater water quality monitoring programs.
  • Interpret, analyse and report on water quality data, and evaluate the quality of laboratory results.
  • Relate the quality of mine-impacted waters with fundamental processes that govern chemistry of natural waters.
  • Provide reviews and educated comments on consultants’ water quality assessment reports, and submit incident reports to regulators.
