Paul Nguyen Manh Tuan Do is on a mission to make a difference on the world stage. Currently pursuing his Master of International Relations at UQ, Paul is driven by an interest in global politics, diplomacy and Indo-Pacific security. His studies focus on maritime security and the geopolitical dynamics between global powers like the United States and China.

A high achiever’s opportunity

Paul’s journey to Australia was made possible by a High Achiever Scholarship, awarded for his outstanding academic performance. The scholarship wasn’t just financial support; it became a symbol of achievement and a source of motivation for both Paul and his family. It recognised his dedication and opened doors to an education in Australia.

Learning in Australia: a new academic chapter

Adapting to a new academic environment came with challenges, but Paul embraced them head-on. Through consistent reading and active participation in class, he has made great progress in improving his English skills, which he struggled with at first.

Supportive lecturers and university staff have been key to his success. Paul highlights the encouragement and guidance he’s received from approachable, engaged professors, something he found less common in Vietnam. This inclusive learning environment has helped him grow not just as a student, but as a future professional.

Finding confidence and community

Living in Queensland suits Paul. The warm climate reminds him of home and he finds the cost of living more manageable compared to other major cities. Through volunteering and participating in university life, Paul has built a sense of belonging and gained confidence in his independence.

A diplomatic future

Paul’s goal is to help promote peace through diplomacy. He believes that communication and negotiation are key to reducing conflict, especially in areas with complex security issues. One day, he hopes to help Vietnam build strong connections with both Western and Asian countries, supporting cooperation in the Indo-Pacific region.
