Project description
This project aims to identify and quantify sources of contaminants of concern entering Australian sewer systems by mapping industrial inputs into catchments (also known as trade waste). A world-first systematic sampling and archiving program will be established for trade waste, combined with an ongoing analytical program to profile chemical contaminants linked to industry. The project will also determine baselines for domestic inputs and associated chemical fingerprints. Comparing domestic and industrial inputs will aid in identifying the main polluters in a catchment that is critical to designing the best source control options. This forms the basis for effectively reducing releases of chemical contaminants into wastewater treatment plants and receiving environments.
Research environment
QAEHS is internationally recognised for research excellence in the environmental sciences. The centre has established state-of-the-art sampling, analysis and archiving facilities located at the Dutton Park Campus. QAEHS maintains 7x LC MS/MS and 5x GC-MS instruments, with a dedicated trace analytical laboratory and state-of-the-art instrumentation. The student will join a cohort of >30 HDR students researching human and environmental exposure to environmental contaminants. The student will have access to centre level travel support scheme supporting participation at international conferences. The student will receive full access to their own computer and workstation.
Scholarship
This is an Fellowship support scheme scholarship project that aligns with a recently awarded Australian Government grant.
The scholarship includes:
- living stipend of $36,400 per annum tax free (2025 rate), indexed annually
- your tuition fees covered
- single overseas student health cover (OSHC).

A working knowledge of environmental science and analytical chemistry would be of benefit to someone working on this project.
You will demonstrate academic achievement in the field/s of environmental science, analytical chemistry, computer science, mathematics and the potential for scholastic success.
A background or knowledge of programming languages such as Python or R is highly desirable.
