Reducing ageism in healthcare

Project summary

Program
PhD
Location
St Lucia
Research area
Psychology

Project description

Australia's population is ageing, and this means that a vital economic, social, and humanitarian goal is to find ways to promote successful ageing. Ageism poses a major threat to older adults' health and well-being, and never is this threat greater than in healthcare, where ageism from others has been linked to inequitable and unethical service delivery. Self-directed ageism, which refers to ageism turned against oneself, can then greatly compound these harmful effects. However, we currently lack a clear understanding of how ageism from both self and others can be reduced in healthcare settings. This project aims to leverage our team's extensive expertise in cognition, ageing, and healthcare service delivery to collect data that allows us to develop ground-breaking, evidence-based tools and resources.
You will deliver a detailed understanding of the risk contexts for ageism in healthcare environments, and an innovative suite of open-access, evidence-based resources for both healthcare provider training and for older people themselves.
