The Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) educates the next generation of dental professionals at the UQ Oral Health Centre – the most advanced tertiary oral health facility in Australia.
Join one of Australia's most respected dental schools and benefit from smaller cohorts with dedicated specialist teachers. You'll learn the science and acquire the technical skills to care for patients, and prevent, diagnose and treat oral diseases and abnormalities.
You'll develop in-depth knowledge of general practice dentistry, periodontics, endodontics, prosthodontics, oral medicine, oral and maxillofacial surgery and public health. You'll also gain the experience needed to provide quality oral healthcare to make a genuine difference to the lives of others.
Program highlights
- Begin building your clinical skills from your first semester in our simulation clinics and labs.
- Move into clinics treating patients in your second year as part of our oral health alliance with the Metro North Hospital and Health Service.
- Undertake a 39-week placement in your final year at various dental clinics throughout Queensland.

Placements and work experience
You will undertake supervised clinical practice in a range of clinical settings including the Oral Health Centre as well as Queensland government and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health Service clinics. During your placements, you will have the opportunity to apply your theoretical knowledge acquired through coursework to practice and develop your clinical skills in real life setting.
You will commence treating patients from year two of the program.
During the final year, clinical placements may be outside of the Brisbane metropolitan area where you will be required to fund your travel, accommodation and daily living expenses.

BE and OET are not accepted.

Student visas
International students who are accepted into full-time study in the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) are eligible to apply for an Australian student visa (subclass 500).
There are a number of requirements you must satisfy before a visa is granted, including the genuine temporary entrant (GTE) requirement.

Additional costs
- Additional practice teeth can be purchased at the student's discretion
- Annual CPR re-certification (approximately $70 per year)
- Dental instruments and equipment including models (approximately $1500).
- Students are expected to fund travel and living expenses associated with placements, some of which may be outside the Brisbane metropolitan area.
- First Aid Certificate (including CPR) (approximately $130 renewed every 3 years)
- Lab coat (approx. $50)
- Laptop computer (value at student's discretion)
- Models may be provided for use during assessments. A charge will be incurred if not returned in working condition (approximately $320 per set or $160 for an upper or lower).
- Phantom head masks are provided, however a charge will be incurred if not returned in working condition (approximately $200)
- Purchase of minimum number of teeth for compulsory pre-clinical learning activities (approximately $50 - $400 per year)
- Safety glasses (approximately $25)
- Costs for vaccinations and serology are the responsibility of the student and will vary based on individual and program requirements.

HECS-HELP
Domestic places in the Bachelor of Dental Science (Honours) are Commonwealth Supported. This means the cost of your education is shared between you and the Australian Government.
