Hi, my name is Inés Valenzuela and I studied Master of Tourism, Hotel and Event Management at The University of Queensland.
Why did you decide to study in Australia and specifically at UQ?
I decided to come to Australia because some of the best programs in tourism were offered here. Also the country, as a destination, appealed to me, particularly its natural assets.
Within my options of postgraduate programs, the one at UQ combined the business component with research and and sustainability in tourism. Given that my aim is to go back to my home country and develop tourism sustainably there, this program seemed well suited. It had courses that I was very interested in as well.
In addition, the initial contact and follow-up at UQ were by far the best compared to other universities I contacted.
What did you like most about your program?
I enjoyed building relationships with world-class lecturers, who also do research and have a lot of industry experience. They were all very approachable and I could go see them anytime to discuss topics I was most interested in.
I did a six-week summer internship at Tourism Fraser Coast thanks to a scholarship from the Faculty of Business, Economics and Law.
What are your career goals and how do you think UQ helped you achieve these goals?
My career goals are to strategically plan tourism development in my country. UQ has given me the tools to have a broad understanding of the tourism industry. The University has also given me access to a high amount of information that will assist me in identifying key issues and successful development practices.
