Hi, my name is Stephanie Chu, I'm from Hong Kong (SAR) and I'm doing a Bachelor of Communications in Digital Media with a minor in Public Relations at The University of Queensland. I'm also a UQ International Student Ambassador.
Why did you choose to study in Australia, and specifically at UQ?
I chose to study in Australia because it has a great higher education sector and UQ's Bachelor of Communication is also among the best in Australia. Also, my friends had previously studied at UQ and said it's a great place to study.
What are your thoughts on studying in Australia and Brisbane?
I chose Brisbane out of so many cities in Australia as it's more relaxed, affordable and people are friendlier – it also has such good weather! My favourite spots in Brisbane are West End for the cafes, Sunnybank for the authentic Asian food and Westfield Garden City Shopping Centre for shopping.
I feel at home here in Brisbane and have made a lot of friends. I joined the Hong Kong Student Association for meeting friends who also came from Hong Kong (SAR).
I also joined the Brisbane International Student Ambassador program to meet more people from around the world and joined 'Newish' (a student-run communications agency) to meet people in the same field of study.
What are the best things about your program at UQ?
I've been wanting to work in the media industry since I was in grade 9, so I chose to study communication to elevate my professional skills. My UQ program provides insights into the media industry which are invaluable when working to become a professional in this area.
The best thing about the program is that it’s really flexible. I can choose whichever courses I'm interested in from the course list, which gives me the ability to explore different aspects of communication. I also get to take an internship at an organisation in Brisbane for course credit which is a great opportunity.
What advice would you give people from other countries about studying at UQ?
Don’t forget to think about your employability skills and take advantage of the services UQ has to offer.
The UQ employability and careers team hold various talks and webinars for international students to teach us skills that will help us with employment in Australia – I would especially recommend taking part in their employability counselling services and webinars.
