Jai Nuth is in his final year of studying a 4-year Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours) at UQ and is already working in his dream industry as a digital marketing executive. Here’s why he decided to study this program and how his time at UQ prepared him for career success.

Jai Nuth, Advanced Business

Throughout my time at UQ, I've met some really good friends and mentors. From the prestige of the courses and programs to the huge number of student initiatives, there is always something to do and contribute to.

Why did you choose to study the Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours) at UQ?

From a young age, I have been interested in numbers and using them to understand how the world works. In Year 12, I strongly aligned with business through studying accounting, leading me to push for the Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours).

I applied for this program because I wanted an accelerated degree that would help me stand out to employers over students with a standard business qualification. I also valued the broadness of the degree. Being able to select from a range of majors and pick more than one provided me with a lot of flexibility.

There are 8 different majors to choose from as part of the Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours):

Choose a professional pathway and study up to 2 majors, or a research pathway, which can lead to a PhD or career roles requiring robust research skills.

How has studying the Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours) prepared you for your future career?

During my first-year subjects, I realised the content I enjoyed most was within finance and marketing. I strongly resonated with the assignments and content within my marketing classes, which led me to choose marketing as my career. For example, within Marketing Strategy (MKTG3501), we completed a group assignment about an interactive bicycle market with price, promotion, product, and geographical factors all affecting metrics. This assignment really contributed to my love of marketing strategy.

Through my Finance and Marketing majors, I went in-depth and built technical and theoretical skills directly relevant to my career. I’m currently working within the digital marketing industry because I love the combination of data analytics and human psychology. Because the Bachelor of Advanced Business (Honours) is so broad, I have also gained applicable skills across the whole business field, from HR and accounting to marketing.

My interpersonal skills have also massively improved through networking events and presentations. I am more confident now speaking in public, which is incredibly important in a client-based industry. Furthermore, my problem-solving, data analytical and teamwork skills were improved throughout the whole journey.

I know the skills and knowledge I’ve gained throughout my degree will help me achieve my goal of becoming a marketing manager in the future and excel in my career.

What other opportunities at UQ have helped prepare you for your next step?

In addition to my studies, I’ve been able to grow my network and increase my professional skills at UQ by getting involved in various programs, student societies and other activities.

1. Student Work Experience Program (SWEP)

This program allowed me to get my first real taste of marketing experience in the unique freight industry, which led to my first job. UQ was very accommodating, from finding the placement for me and reviewing the work to ensuring I was being treated ethically and doing work I wanted to do. I learned a lot from this experience.

2. Advanced Business Student Committee

It was really rewarding to be part of the Advanced Business Student Committee. I was able to contribute to the future of my degree through helping push changes students want within the degree and facilitating academic, social and industry-based activities among our cohorts. I made some great friends and industry connections through this too.

3. Careers and Employability

The Careers and Employability team have always been very helpful when working with them as part of the Advanced Business Student Committee and during my personal ventures. For example, they provided me with a progress check that allowed me to ensure I was on the right track. This initiative strongly contributed to the value of a UQ business degree for me.

4. The University of Queensland’s Marketing & Advertising Society (UQMAS)

It was great to give back to the marketing community during my 2 years at UQMAS and help first- and second-year students figure out if this pathway was right for them. I also really enjoyed working on my social media and treasury skills, acting as Marketing Sub-Executive and Treasurer for the society.
