Hi, my name is Matilde. I’m from Italy, and I’m currently studying a Master of Business at The University of Queensland. If you’re interested in studying this program but want to know what it’s like, I hope my experience inspires you.

Why did you choose to study a Master of Business at UQ?

During my bachelor's degree in corporate communication, I discovered a deep interest in marketing and advertising subjects. I also found my passion for creating and designing content, particularly for social media channels, as an effective means of conveying a company's message to its target audience.

This led me to pursue a Master of Business majoring in marketing and advertising.

Choosing to pursue a master's degree in Australia, far from my home country, was a challenging decision. However, I had previously lived in Australia during a gap year after high school and thoroughly enjoyed the experience, so I decided to return to further my education.

I specifically chose to study at UQ because I sought a more practical and hands-on approach to marketing and advertising, which differed from the predominantly theoretical Italian educational system. The UQ master’s program combines theoretical lectures with practical tutorials and group assignments based on real company case studies. I believe this approach will provide me with the opportunity to gain confidence and prepare me for solving real-world marketing and advertising challenges after I graduate.

During the application process, I discovered the opportunity to apply for UQ's prestigious Europe Global Leaders Scholarship and decided to take a chance. I firmly believe that studying abroad is a remarkable experience that challenges my personal and academic growth and provides me with the skills needed to thrive in a constantly evolving business environment, especially in the field of digital marketing and advertising.

How has your degree helped you prepare for your future career?

The structure of the UQ master's program has been crucial in my educational journey. It focuses on essential theoretical concepts and then promotes their active application through real business case studies, particularly in my chosen marketing and advertising majors. This approach challenged me to think creatively and critically, analysing innovative strategies to address practical business challenges and provide effective recommendations.

I’ve also participated in various group projects that have allowed me to collaborate with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. This experience has pushed me to enhance my communication skills and encouraged our team to generate diverse solutions. What I value most about teamwork is its ability to gather insights from students from different cultures, fostering creative thinking and allowing us to think outside the box. This aspect of my education is preparing me effectively for teamwork in my future career.

What extra-curricular activities have you been involved in?

From the beginning of my master's program, I was impressed by the wide range of clubs and associations available to students. I decided to join the UQ Business Postgraduate Student Association (UQBSPA) to connect with fellow business postgraduate students and participate in their events to enhance my networking skills and connect with industry professionals.

Not only did I join the association, but I also applied to be a marketing sub-executive. This role allowed me to gain practical experience managing a student association's marketing strategies.

"Working with my marketing team was incredibly enjoyable, prompting me to apply for the position of marketing manager in my second semester."

As a marketing manager, I manage a team of 5 students and create compelling and engaging content to promote our events. This experience is extremely valuable to me as it provides continuous improvement opportunities for my digital marketing and social media skills, allowing me to practically apply the marketing theories I've learned during my classes. Moreover, managing and collaborating within a team has underscored the significance of effective communication and cooperation among team members to achieve effective results.

What’s the most interesting thing you’ve learnt or done at UQ?

One of the most interesting experiences I've had at UQ is participating in industry-related seminars and networking events, such as the Career Campus Expo and the Industry Networking Night, which I contributed to through my involvement with UQBSPA. These events provided me with invaluable insights into Australian industries, giving me a better understanding of the professional landscape.

Moreover, engaging in these activities pushed me out of my comfort zone as I interacted directly with industry professionals, actively networking and promoting my professional profile. These experiences have been essential in my personal and professional development, preparing me for the challenges and opportunities after my graduation.

Do you feel a sense of belonging in the UQ community?

UQ offers numerous opportunities for students to expand their social networks and connect with peers. As an international student far from my home country, I view UQ events like Market Day and Orientation Week as essential for fostering connections and creating lasting relationships.

"I believe that having friends and fellow students at university is crucial for sharing academic challenges and celebrating achievements. In my own experience, I began to feel a sense of belonging when I joined UQBSPA and actively participated in more UQ activities and events."

I believe that my educational journey should not be limited to studying and focusing on exams; it should also include active engagement in UQ's vibrant student life.

Would you recommend UQ to other students?

I recommend UQ to students who share my passion for their chosen subjects and are willing to challenge themselves daily to gain new skills and capabilities through the university experience. You’ll benefit from a comprehensive learning environment that includes lectures, tutorials, real business case studies, workshops, seminars, and many business-related networking events. UQ offers a wide range of opportunities to enhance both your educational and personal growth.
