Everything you need to know about our 6-year Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine
Study tips

From 2027, the UQ Medical School will be offering a new 6-year pathway to becoming a doctor. The Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine program will allow students to enter the medical workforce as doctors at least 1 year earlier than other study pathways at UQ.

This vertical dual program is ideal for high school students who want to progress quickly into the UQ Doctor of Medicine. It offers excellent preparation for the UQ Doctor of Medicine, helping students develop the knowledge, skills and values expected of modern healthcare professionals.

How is this Doctor of Medicine pathway different?

In other medicine pathways, you study an undergraduate program for at least 3 years before commencing the 4-year Doctor of Medicine program. The Bachelor of Medical Science / Doctor of Medicine vertical dual program includes a tailored 2-year pre-medicine component, followed by the 4-year MD program, allowing you to graduate in only 6 years.

The first 2 years (4 semesters) of study are aligned with the MD curriculum and include courses in:

  • biomedical sciences
  • public health
  • science
  • humanities
  • computer science and information technology.

In this new program structure, you are awarded both degrees at the end of your 6 years of study.

Who is this program for?

This program is designed for students who are about to finish high school and are already sure that medicine is their career goal. If you’re committed to medicine from Year 12 and comfortable with a focused pre-medicine curriculum, this is the pathway for you.

Applications will be open to both domestic and international students.

If you think you might need more time to decide if medicine is right for you, or if you’d like to undertake research or an honours degree before starting your Doctor of Medicine, consider one of UQ's other medicine pathways.

Other options for studying medicine at UQ

This new vertical dual program is only one of UQ's available pathways to become a doctor.

We will continue to offer our provisional entry pathway, graduate entry pathway, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander pathway, which are available in a range of regional locations and Greater Brisbane.

What are the entry requirements?

  • Adjusted ATAR 95 (or equivalent) or higher
  • Year 12 English (or equivalent)
  • Mathematical Methods (Units 3 & 4, C) (or equivalent)
  • UCAT ANZ.

The UCAT ANZ must be completed the same year you apply and will be used to rank applicants for invitations to a Multiple Mini Interview (MMI).

Entry is competitive and will be based on ATAR, UCAT ANZ and MMI scores.

To progress to the MD component, you’ll need to complete the pre-medicine component within 2 years, achieving a pass in all courses.
